A new option
Fortunately, a superior technology is now available, an epoxy-based coating that provides the most effective API-approved fire protection available. This ANSI/UL 1709-approved coating is lighter, thinner, better looking and has a bond rate 20 times higher than concrete—and it prevents corrosion rather than contributing to it. It’s comparably priced and carries a 10-year warranty.
This amazing material is called Chartek 1709, and Pro-Kleen has applied more of it than any other company in the western hemisphere.

Intumescent Fireproofing
The old technology
The first drawback with traditional concrete fireproofing—even lightweight concrete—is that corrosion continues to occur beneath it. (Concrete never cures completely, so its moisture content actually contributes to this problem.) The second drawback is that concrete only retards fire, rather than preventing it. Under sustained heat, the concrete eventually breaks down and exposes the structure beneath. |
